Heating for the way you swim
A pool heat pump uses electricity to move heat from outdoor air into pool water. For a Phoenix or Scottsdale owner who plans to maintain a comfortable pool temperature over longer stretches, it deserves a careful look. The outdoor air temperature, the pool’s heat loss and your swimming schedule affect how it performs.
Garrett is walking through the Pentair UltraTemp heat pump. Haoly Pools is a Pentair authorized installer, and the installation assessment needs the exact UltraTemp model, not just the product-family name.

What makes a heat pump different?
An electric pool heat pump transfers existing heat; it does not create heat by burning gas at the equipment pad. Pentair describes UltraTemp models with a titanium heat exchanger, digital controls and automatic defrost. Some versions offer heating and cooling. Features and electrical requirements vary across models, so a proposal should name the model and its actual specifications.
A heat pump is often considered for steady heating across days, while gas heating may appeal to someone who wants occasional faster warm-ups. Neither phrase gives you a guaranteed temperature or bill. The right comparison uses your pool volume, expected use, cover, site conditions and local energy rates.

What happens as nights cool?
Phoenix’s 1991–2020 climate normals show a notable change from October into November. A heat pump takes heat from the surrounding air, so cooler conditions can reduce output and increase the time needed to warm water. Pentair’s UltraTemp manual discusses this effect. A Scottsdale property may have a different microclimate from the Phoenix airport station. A cover and wind exposure also influence the outcome.
Check the electrical service before selecting a model
The UltraTemp installation guide lists model-specific electrical data, including voltage and minimum circuit ampacity. It directs electrical installation to a qualified professional under applicable codes. The electrician needs to evaluate the home's service and panel along with existing loads, the equipment location and the selected heat pump. An open breaker space alone does not establish that the system can support it.
Our heat-pump electrical-service guide explains what to gather for that assessment. Do not open a panel or make wiring changes for a preliminary check.
Questions for a useful proposal
If your main question is which heating approach fits your routine, continue with gas heater versus heat pump in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Haoly Pools can assess the property and build a model-specific recommendation.
- Which exact UltraTemp model is proposed, and is it heating only or a heat/cool version?
- What pool volume, target temperature and months of use are assumed?
- How do cover use, wind and shade affect the heating plan?
- Who will assess panel and service capacity and perform electrical work?
- What operating assumptions support any cost comparison?
Does a pool heat pump work when Phoenix evenings get cold?
It can operate within the selected model’s rated conditions, but output and warm-up time change with outdoor conditions. A professional should review the exact model and the months you want to swim.
Does every UltraTemp model cool the pool too?
No. Pentair lists different model configurations, including heat/cool versions. Confirm the exact model in the proposal.
Can I tell from my breaker panel whether a heat pump will fit?
The panel label and available spaces are only part of a load assessment. A qualified electrician must review the service, connected loads and the selected unit’s specifications.
