Garrett compares Pentair MasterTemp gas heating with UltraTemp electric heat-pump heating.
Two heating approaches, with different utility needs.

Start with your swimming plans

The best pool-heating choice starts with a calendar: When do you want to swim, and how long should the pool stay warm? A Phoenix owner planning a few fall weekends may weigh heating speed differently from a Scottsdale owner who wants a maintained temperature through a longer season. Your pool, cover and household energy supply can change the answer.

Garrett is comparing Pentair’s MasterTemp gas heater and UltraTemp electric heat pump. Haoly Pools is a Pentair authorized installer. The names describe product families; a final recommendation must use exact models and a site assessment.

The practical difference

This table is a decision aid, not a cost or performance guarantee. The Pentair sizing calculator itself advises consulting a pool professional about location, environment and operation.

Use the Phoenix season as an input

The Phoenix Sky Harbor 1991–2020 normals show that fall nights cool substantially. That pattern matters because every pool loses heat, while an air-source heat pump’s output also changes with ambient conditions. A Scottsdale yard’s shade, wind and cover use may differ from the airport station. Give the installer the actual months and times you want to swim, rather than asking for a generic “winter heater.”

Compare the whole project, not just the equipment

A gas-heater proposal should account for the available gas supply. Pentair’s MasterTemp manual says the meter must be checked for the heater and other appliances on it. An electric-heat-pump proposal should include a qualified electrical assessment: the UltraTemp manual has model-specific electrical requirements. Existing supply may affect scope and price on either path.

Ask for both installed cost and operating assumptions in writing: intended set point, months of use, estimated run pattern, cover use and the rates used. An estimate without those assumptions is hard to compare. Do not treat a universal “cheaper to run” claim as a quote for your home.

Is there a third approach?

Pentair also offers the UltraTemp ETi hybrid heater, which combines gas and heat-pump modes. It is a separate product, with its own installation and utility requirements. It may be worth discussing when both operating styles matter; the presence of a hybrid option does not remove the need to assess gas and electrical supply.

Is a gas heater or heat pump cheaper for a Phoenix pool?

There is no property-independent answer. Equipment, installation work, local rates, weather, cover use, target temperature and swimming pattern all affect cost. Compare proposals using the same assumptions.

Will a heat pump warm the pool as quickly as a gas heater?

Warm-up time varies with the exact models and conditions. For occasional on-demand heating, gas is often considered for faster response; request a property-specific estimate before making plans around a date.

Can I switch from a gas heater to a heat pump without other work?

That depends on the equipment pad, circulation system and electrical service. A qualified installer and electrician should review the site before promising a simple swap.
